Fear of Public Speaking
It is a known fact that fear of public speaking has always
been the most terrifying experience. It
is greater than the fear of flying, heights, snakes, or auditioning for a movie
or voice acting role. I have been
helping actors, business executives, politicians, and ministers in one-on-one
sessions, which is the simplest way to eliminate fear of public speaking. Over four decades, I have had a success
rate, which is now approaching 100%. We have been using these methods at Voice
Masters of America and initially we always start with these nine basic
principles listed here.
* Articulation, enunciation, and
pronunciation. Is it clear? Are you dropping ends? Hopefully it’s not slurred. Does it have clarity, vibrance, and
brilliance? Do an objective checklist
of your work and that of others.
* Tone. Does it resonate (in the mask) clear? Does it fill the mouth?
Are you using the full range of your vocal instrument or are you strident,
hoarse, nasal, or breathy?
* Rate of Delivery. Is it adjusted for the size of the room, the
audience, and the material content?
Does it vary in pitch and nuances?
Can you speak at the rate of 150 words per minute?
* Breath Control. Should be deep in the abdominal core, expanding
your lower, floating ribcage and back.
It must not be audible (never obstructive), and it must be well
controlled.
* Volume quality must be geared to
the text or subtext, and careful attention must be given to supporting the
instrument and producing a warm mellifluous sound.
* Relaxation. Speech must be rhythmic and flowing like the waves of the sea,
supported by the breath, and a solid core foundation with no upper movement of
the chest or shoulders. The eyes should have a smile or a look of expectancy. (The bon-giorno look.) You must avoid tenseness at all costs.
* Stresses. Do you faithfully depict the message or subtext? Are you emphasizing the right words to
convey your meaning? Are you stressing
the right syllables?
* Range. Are you using the full range of your vocal apparatus? The best speakers actually do vocal
exercises and mark their speeches with musical notes. They have arrows pointing
up when a line reading goes higher, and down pointing when you want to go
lower.
* Smoothness. “Use all gently for in the very tempest, torrent and, as I might
say, whirlwind of passion, you must acquire and beget a temperance that may
give it smoothness” – a quote from Shakespeare.
These nine points help the speaker achieve preparedness and
confidence. It’s rewarding to see how
quickly candidates start losing their fear of the spotlight once they start
practicing and absorbing these nine points of technique. Study tapes available at the Voice Store
will offer constantly changing and diversified material on eliminating fear of
public speaking.
