Sample Persuasive Speech
Mark Antony’s famous speech from Julius Caesar’s Act III,
Scene 2, written by William Shakespeare, but the fact that Antony actually
spoke those words are historically documented.
The resplendent lyrical passages are the best examples of a “sample
persuasive speech” I can think of. The
scene is Rom 44 BC. A group of conspirators have stabbed Julius Caesar to
death. Somewhat disdainfully, they
allow Mark Antony to eulogize his murdered friend. The crowd has been convinced
in a speech by Brutus that Caesar was a tyrant. Incidentally, that speech was another great “sample persuasive
speech.” The mob is very raucous and
hostile to Antony. He must be very
careful lest the mob turn on him. This
is what he said:
“Friends, Romans, Countrymen, lend me your ears”
(strongly emphasize “lend”). I come to
bury Caesar, not to praise him...”
Now, in just the two opening lines, Antony, by boldly
emphasizing the word “lend” in the first line and not in the second has set up
a subtext for the greatest sample persuasive speech ever delivered to an
audience.
Note his next lines: “The evil that men do lives after them;
the good is oft entered with their bones. (Emphasize the word “good”._
This is a general statement that few are likely to oppose, a
point of agreement.
“The evil that men do,” etc. is a quotation from Euripides,
although Antony reverses the sense of what Euripides said, which was that the
evil men do is buried with them, and the good lives on. A “sample persuasive speech.” A clever speaker can twist a quotation to
suit his or her purpose when making an emotional appeal.
In the body of this great speech, Mark Antony has involved
all these elements. Pride, shame, hope,
fear, love, hatred, desire, contentment and grief. Try using all or most of these emotional appeals. Listen to my demonstration sample persuasive
